I’m drinking kombucha. And by “drinking” I mean, I’ve had two bottles of it, and it’s actually not bad. Kombucha, in essence, is fermented tea. Yes…tea gone sour. But I kinda like it! It’s supposed to aid in digestion, as well as help your skin, and give you an over all detox. While I don’t necessarily need the skin clean up, I’ll take anything that aids in digestion! It smells and tastes a bit sour…but it is certainly not “spit out in the middle of the parking lot” gross as my friend Ashley Cook seems to think. But compared to my other new hippie ways, kombucha isn’t so bad!
I’m drinking apple cider vinegar mixed with honey and hot water. And by “drinking”, this time I mean, like a cup a day. This is also supposed to help in digestion, as well as really help clear up your allergies. Which local honey aids with as well. I have noticed a TOTAL change in my digestion, but not so much in the allergies. It could be that my honey is from a cousin in Florida, so I wouldn’t necessarily consider it local, but soon enough, my friends…soon enough.
I am drinking raw milk! And by “drinking”, I mean drinking, baking with, pairing with cereal, etc. I actually like it. As someone who drinks fat-free Lactaid, I was surprised at how not-gagging the Whole Raw was. Basically, whole raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized, which is a little bit weird, I know. But I have been reading a lot on the pasteurization process and how it causes a lot of lactose intolerance (hello digestion, once again), as well as other harmful effects.
I want to become an apiarist. Yes…an apiarist. A person who keeps bees. I have just read so much on the benefits of using honey over refined sugar that I can’t wait to try this one out. Plus I have a fantastic new backyard with which to have an apiary. My aunt probably won’t go out there much because she is afraid of bees…but we’ll see. Maybe I will get her a full bee suit.
I am making re-usable produce bags….and I sewed them myself! I just got tired of taking the little plastic bags to get my apples. I wanted something more eco-friendly (I hate that term) and I saw a post on my new fav blog www.apartmenttherapy.com about a company that sells them for like $10 a pop! I was like, “I could make that for $10 or LESS!!” Granted, it was like a $26 investment and a lot of time spent between me and Becky Burdashaw figuring it out and fighting with my stupid sewing machine, but I made some! 10 in fact! So, technically, I made them for $2.60 a pop. Take that, bite bags!
I am really trying to cut down a lot of things, and live a more simple lifestyle. It’s taking a LOT of work, but it’s actually been really rewarding. Seth and I have grown closer by spending more time at home, saved money by eating out less, lost weight by eating better, and had quite good digestion!!
I am excited to see what kind of new adventures pop up in our new house! Here’s a few things I am thinking about:
– Keeping chickens
– Gardening
– Being a better composter
– Collecting rain water
– Making the house more eco-friendly (again with the terms, I know)
– Living more intentionally within my community
– and many more!!
(Insert excited, girly scream here to close this post).
