I really enjoy the types of discussions we have in Church in Mission. Today, we discussed (and Bolger got fired up about) the idea of Church Leadership and how we are growing. This discussion started in the idea of Lutheranism and their structure, and morphed into dialoging about if we should have paid staff at a church, as well as how we still see in the church the 10/90 split, in that 10% of the people are doing 90% of the work. Why do we think that is? Bolger (my Prof) was alluding to the fact that when we pay someone to do something, we immediately put them in the position above the rest of the parishioners, and letting them be a bit more hands off. Something interesting he said was that “pew potatoes” who sit for an hour on a Sunday morning, look NO different than their neighbors. In the US, someone has to be with a community for 6-10 hours before you start to look any different from those around you. So…are we looking any different?
