What would the church look like today if we made people go through a process of becoming baptized that took three years? I want to say that it would make the sacrament of baptism begin to feel more like a sacrament again, however, I know our culture and I think it would end up alienating people, similar to those in the second or third centuries. I think learning about the sacraments today helped probe some ideas about what an ideal church might look like. I really have liked the idea that started in the first century of the Love feast, or table fellowship. I also like the concept of taking church people through some sort of class before they become baptized. The danger with that is forgetting all about the grace that baptism brings though. If you are emphasizing so much the idea of what you become afterward, you miss the grace and mercy that is extended to you through that act. Also, I think the church walks a fine like with the Eucharist as well. I see the need for having it every Sunday, however, we also don’t want it to become so routinized that it looses its meaning and power. That will be one I might have to think through a bit.
